A sleep study or a Polysomnogram is used to diagnose different sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, Periodic Limb Movement Disorder, Insomnia, Narcolepsy etc. It may be used to confirm diagnoses or change treatment plans.
A polysomnogram or a sleep study records multiple channels such as EEG, EOG, EMG (chin and legs), ECG, Respiratory flow, effort, Oxygen level, heart rate etc.
There are many different kinds of sleep studies. The Gold standard is Level I sleeps study which is a complete sleep study attended by a medical professional in a sleep lab.
Level II sleep study is a complete sleep study but unattended and performed at client / patient’s residence (for information purpose only. We do not offer this test).
Level III sleep study is a cardio respiratory sleep study which is done at a client / patient’s residence. This sleep study is limited to diagnosing or ruling out sleep apnea.
MSLT (Multiple Sleep Latency Test) is a sleep study that is performed to diagnose narcolepsy. It measures the time it takes the patient to fall asleep and to see if the patient experiences REM sleep in the short nap.
MWT (Maintenance of Wakefulness Test) is a sleep study to measure the time a patient can stay awake in an non-stimulating situation.
