CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. CPAP therapy is the gold standard therapy and the most effective treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea. CPAP machine must be used every night in order for it to be effective. It’s a treatment and not a cure so if patient does not wear the CPAP, they will have apneas and or snoring.

A CPAP machine provides air at a constant prescribed pressure through a tube and a CPAP mask to eliminate obstruction in the upper airway. It provides air with constant pressure and acts as a pneumatic splint. This results in an open airway all night, no obstruction and improved sleep quality.

There are different kinds of CPAP machines such as CPAP, APAP, BiPAP etc. Obstructive sleep apnea is treated well with a CPAP machine. APAP is automatic positive airway pressure and the pressure adjusts automatically as needed. BiPAP delivers  a different PAP level on inspiration and expiration.

CPAP machines are able to provide data reports which demonstrate hours of usage, mask leaks, CPAP pressure level as well as Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI). Some of the companies offer software that a user can install on his / her computer to view their own data.

Optimal CPAP level can be determined by doing an in lab sleep study with a CPAP machine. The other option is to use An automatic CPAP machine which may be called an APAP to determine the best CPAP level.

CPAPs come with various comfort features such as Aflex, Cflex and EPR. These features lower the constant pressure upon exhalation thus making the exhalation easier.

Untreated Sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure / hypertension, increased risk of stroke as well as heart problems. CPAP machine helps improve user’s sleep quality and therefore improved quality of life, less sleepiness, more energy and alertness.
